{"id":194,"date":"2026-05-27T13:38:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T13:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movingtoalaskausa.com\/?p=194"},"modified":"2026-05-27T13:38:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T13:38:29","slug":"solar-power-expected-to-soon-be-cheaper-than-natural-gas-power-in-anchorage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movingtoalaskausa.com\/?p=194","title":{"rendered":"Solar power expected to soon be cheaper than natural gas power in Anchorage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span>Alaska\u2019s largest planned solar farm<\/span><span>, expected to break ground west of Anchorage this summer, is likely to deliver cheaper electricity than possible with imported natural gas, according to information the state\u2019s largest electric utility shared with state lawmakers this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtoalaskausa.com\/?p=192\">Trump administration will make green card hopefuls return to home countries before applying<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>In a May 14 hearing of the Alaska House Labor and Commerce Committee, Chugach Electric government affairs manager Trish Baker said power from the project should cost about the same as power produced from natural gas at current prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have not brought that project before the (Regulatory Commission of Alaska) yet, but that\u2019s our estimate,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Because gas prices are expected to rise in coming years <\/span><span>amid a growing shortage in Cook Inlet<\/span><span>, the solar project is poised to become cheaper than power generated by imported natural gas.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s only for the months when solar is an option. In the winter, during peak demand for heating and home electricity use, solar produces minimal energy in much of Alaska.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Solar energy costs are declining rapidly, and in parts of rural Alaska it is <\/span><span>cheaper to operate both solar and diesel power plants<\/span><span> than diesel plants alone, despite the cost of operating solar only seasonally. Red Dog Mine, near Kotzebue, is <\/span><span>planning a large solar farm<\/span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Natural gas power is cheaper than diesel power, but the economics are driving in the same direction, said Rep. Zack Fields, D-Anchorage, during the May 14 hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe previous Cook Inlet prices, gas was cheaper. With price escalation, the lines cross and some of these small renewable projects are cheaper. That seems to be the economic environment that we\u2019re in,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtoalaskausa.com\/?p=190\">Land named for colorful character \u2018Herring Pete\u2019 added to Alaska\u2019s Kachemak Bay State Park<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Julie Hasquet, manager of corporate communications with Chugach, said solar power costs \u201care expected to be comparable to thermal generation costs, resulting in essentially no meaningful impact to electric rates over the life of the project,\u201d she said. A key benefit of the solar project is that it supports diversification in generation which reduces long-term risk and reliance on natural gas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She added that she doesn\u2019t see a scenario where Chugach \u201ccould rely on all renewables for summer months without some new, major hydro coming online.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chugach has begun <\/span><span>preliminary planning for four smaller hydropower projects<\/span><span> in Southcentral Alaska.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fields had <\/span><span>proposed exempting<\/span><span> two of those hydropower projects and the solar project from regulatory commission approval. The RCA has authority over most electricity rates in Alaska.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other legislators opposed Fields\u2019 proposal, which did not advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI guess I haven\u2019t seen that renewables really bring the cost of anything down,\u201d said Rep.
